Do I need home insurance if I rent?
If you’re renting your home, it isn’t mandatory to have insurance – but you should still consider it. Any insurance your landlord holds to cover the building won’t cover any of your possessions, so for peace of mind in case of a flood, theft or fire you can take out a contents insurance policy.
Contents insurance vs buidlings insurance
There are different types of home insurance policy – if you rent you will only need a contents insurance policy as your landlord is responsible for the building itself and anything that’s fitted permanently like kitchen counters or a bathroom suite. Contents insurance will cover all the things that are yours (think clothes, jewellery, any furniture or soft furnishings).
Depending on your living situation, you may need to check out specific policy options to cover your stuff if you rent a room in a shared property, or live in student accommodation at Uni.
What does home contents insurance cover?
A home contents insurance policy will cover all the personal possessions you keep at home like your clothes and furniture. Top tip for bike owners, even if you keep your bike inside when not in use you’ll need separate bicycle insurance if you want to be covered out and about or you use it for work.
